Celebrating our Diversity with Black History Month

February is Black History Month or African-American Heritage Month (my preferred reference). Celebrating Black History is a way of celebrating our diversity as a people. Whatever our backgrounds, origins or beliefs, we should not limit such celebrations to only one month – we should continue to celebrate our diversity every month of the year. It is important to note that no group has a monopoly on any month, so celebrating Black achievements and heritage during February does not preclude us from celebrating the achievements of other groups. Black history is not about black achievement, but American achievement.
MCCC is leading diversity initiatives in Monroe County and has been at the forefront of celebrating the achievements of various groups; this will continue, as we seek to bring more tolerance, acceptance, and understanding in this wonderful community. As a nation, our strength is in our diversity that is why the United States of America is the greatest nation in the world. Please join us, as we celebrate different groups on a monthly basis.
