Respecting, Celebrating and Appreciating our Diversity

Diversity is a word that has been thrown about so much in recent years. So, what does this ubiquitous word really mean? Well, in my opinion, diversity is about differences. So because we are all different, we are diverse. Diversity has to do with differences in gender, race, ethnicity, religion, national origin, sexual orientation, age, disability status and much more.

As a nation, our strength is in our diversity. The United States is the greatest country in the world, because of our diversity. Individuals from different countries, races, religions, etc. came to these shores and together built this nation. For those who were already here, the story is different.

Celebrating, appreciating, and respecting diversity means we allow individuals and groups who are different from us to respectfully express their differences in a way that gives us some understanding of their culture, religion, or other differences. It does not mean suppressing or limiting their expression of who and what they are.

We should join them in celebrating and expressing their culture; that is how we can gain a better understanding of who and what they are. So, my MCCC family, please join me as we celebrate various and sundry events and holidays that represent our diversity on campus. It is all part of the educational process and we will all be the better for it.
